Educational Videos: Recap and Overview

Video content is a vital tool for learners and part of Universal Design for Learning (UDL). The UDL framework, first defined by David H. Rose, Ed.D. of the Harvard Graduate School of Education and the Center for Applied Special Technology (CAST) in the 1990s, calls for creating a curriculum from the outset that provides:

  • Multiple means of representation give learners various ways of acquiring information and knowledge,
  • Multiple means of expression to provide learners alternatives for demonstrating what they know, and
  • Multiple means of engagement to tap into learners’ interests, challenge them appropriately, and motivate them to learn.

Research done by Lynda Bennett one of our 24/25 Digital Learning Champions looked at the need for educational video content from the students at LCC.

Understanding that lecturers face challenges in creating long form videos due to time constraints, we have explored alternative solutions. Based on student feedback, we believe that creating short-form videos, (6 Minutes), to recap lectures and overview videos explaining upcoming projects is an effective way forward. This approach is feasible using only the lecturers’ computers, ensuring that students receive the information they need in an accessible format.

We have created framework guides to help tutors structure these recap and overview videos and some tips on how to create successful videos from home.

These videos can be created by recording a PowerPoint, or straight onto Panopto as well as the new Learning Glass. If you use Miro at lot with your group, you can also use the new talk track tool.

When creating educational videos it’s important we are mindful of the UAL Educational Video Policy and Educational Video Retention policy .

If you need support with creating these videos please contact the LCC Digital Learning Team. We also value feedback from staff and students to help promote good practice as part of our community of practice and invite you to join our digital pioneers.
